2018 Chair Affair | Furniture Design Competition

Entry Criteria
Jurors will judge entries on the following criteria:  
1) Concept Statement (clear explanation of entry)  
2) Creativity of Piece (design innovation and uniqueness).  
3) Function (usability and appropriateness). 
4) Material integrity (color, texture, detail, durability, suitability). 
5) Craftsmanship and execution (structural and aesthetic value).  
6) Best Recycled Materials Design: To be eligible, the entry must contain a minimum of 50% recycled
content. To be considered a recycled design, the entry must contain reused, reconditioned or
remanufacture's materials or recycled raw materials destined for the landfill. 
Entries are not limited to chairs, but MUST be furniture i.e.: tables, chairs, benches, sofas, bureaus, etc. 
Entries must be freestanding, and wall or ceiling mounted pieces will not be accepted. Pieces must
weigh less than 300 pounds and be original in design. Pieces may draw inspiration from past or present
furniture designs but may not directly copy. Entries must be assembled or manufactured between April
21, 2017 and April 15, 2018. 
Eight awards will be presented at the Chair Affair Gala:

  • Best Professional Design
  • Best Student Design (Grad)
  • Best Student Design (Undergrad)
  • Best Recycled Materials Design
  • Best Craftsmanship
  • Best Functional Design
  • Most Creative Design
  • People’s Choice Award

Category placement will be at the jury’s discretion. When entering the competition, it is not necessary to select a category you wish to enter. People’s Choice Award is selected by Gala attendees. Prizes will be awarded in each category and awarded at the Chair Affair Gala held on April 21, 2018. 
Entry fees are non-refundable and must be paid on IDI Payment Portal unless other arrangements are
made. Student entry fees are $30.00 for students, professional entry fees are $40.00. Please fill out 2018 ENTRY FORM.


ALL entry forms MUST be submitted no later than April 15, 2018. Entries later than April 15 will be considered late and will not be judged. There will be no exceptions and the entry fee will remain non-refundable. Entry fee does not include ticket to the Gala, and entrants must purchase tickets separately. Tickets may be purchased online (see
our website for more details: IDI Payment Portal or at the door.  
Entries to be delivered to 5610 Glenwood in Boise, Idaho (Expo Idaho North Building) between 3:00pm and 7:00pm Friday April 21. Late Deliveries will not be accepted. Please contact Tab if you have special drop off needs at (208) 571-4771. Please verify on entry form if idi is allowed to move your entry. 
Entries and Awards MUST be picked up Sunday, April 22 between 10am and 1pm at the Gala Site
idi will not be responsible for entries left behind after 1:00 pm Sunday, April 22 2018.
